So what can we do?

What can we recycle?

Most of the rubbish we throw away is recyclable. Paper, cardboard, all metals, glass, textiles and plastics are common recyclable materials that we throw away. In fact, if you were to visit a Household Waste Recycling Centre (the tip) in Lincolnshire you would be able to recycle over 20 different types of material.

Most homes in Lincolnshire are provided with a kerbside collection for mixed recyclables. Recyclable materials such as paper, card, plastic bottles, tins and cans should be put out for collection, please make sure you use this service.

All schools can recycle their waste through their local council (a free service in some areas). You can also recycle mobile phones, ink cartridges, textiles and furniture and can even generate money for your school.

How to reduce your waste

Use less in the first place!

The more waste we buy, use and collect the more rubbish we generate.

Here are some ideas that could help reduce your waste:

  • Don't waste paper. Use both sides of each sheet especially when printing
  • Only print when totally necessary
  • Waste free lunch: don't wrap food in tin foil or cling film - use reuseable containers
  • Bag it in style: use long-lasting textile bags for shopping
  • Buy items that have less packaging

How to reuse your waste

Use it again for something else

When you go shopping, it's a good idea to take your own bags with you instead of getting new ones each time. How many times can you re-use a bag before it breaks?

Here are some ideas that could help reuse your waste:

  • Reuse paper in school by creating scrap boxes where partially used paper can be used again for rough work.
  • Swap-shop: bored with your toys? Exchange with a friend
  • Give your unwanted clothes and other items to charity shops
  • Get creative - find 101 ways to make things out of a paper bag or a yoghurt pot.
