What happens to recycling?
In Lincolnshire most recycling is collected in a mixed wheelie bin collection. The first thing that has to happen to this waste is that it needs to be separated.
In your kerbside recycling in Lincolnshire you can put out a mixture of all sorts materials for collection. Before it can be used to make something new, it must be sorted into different the types of material such as paper, card, plastic and cans.
When your bin, or bag of recyclables is collected by the recycling lorry it first gets taken to a factory called a Materials Recovery Facility or MRF for short.
At the MRF materials are separated using both machines and by people to sort the waste , like in the picture here.
The materials are separated into different piles of paper, card, plastic, cans and tins. Each different material is then taken away to another factory to be recycled into something new.
By looking at the pages below you can find out what happens to all the different recyclables you put in your kerbside recycling.
